February Intentions

February 1, 2013

Happy Friday, y’all! I had pretty much no intention of posting every day this week seeing as I’ve been consumed by school, PT, prepping for a Skype interview with the lovely Erin (stay tuned for details on this!), and writing my 10 page yoga reflection paper due today– so I’m quite impressed with myself! Tonight, I head back to the yoga studio to begin another weekend of teacher training. I’m nervous again because I’ll be making a 10 minute presentation at some point during the weekend. I’m pretty comfortable public speaking with notes but no notes for that length of time somewhat terrifies me. I guess every weekend there will be something pushing me out of my comfort zone, huh!?

But onto the fact that it’s FEBRUARY. Wow. Just wow.  I didn’t set January intentions because I wanted to give myself a chance to think about intentions for 2013 as a whole and reflect on 2012. But in doing so, I felt a little like something was missing. So I’m really excited it’s February and I can get back to my monthly intentions!

Remove the phrase “I CAN’T” from my vocabulary.

I say this phrase a lot without even realizing it. I thought it would be a fun challenge for February to try to NOT say “I can’t.” The thing about this phrase is.. it does nothing for us. It’s the definition of a negative attitude and gets us no where by saying it. Imagine everything we could accomplish if we said, “I can” every time we would otherwise say, “I can’t”? If I had a dollar for every time I said, “I can’t” and then did (once I got over my self-doubt, fears, or laziness) – I’d be a rich woman. I’m hoping this challenge opens my eyes to negative versus positive phrasing and how it changes my daily life.

Spend at least ten minutes doing something for myself each day.

I only have four days off in the month of February.. and they’re all in a row. So.. obviously I won’t have much “me” time to look forward to, which is something I really value. I want to make a point to carve out at least 10 minutes for myself each day to do something that I love, whether it be reading, stretching, taking a bath, whatever!

Make getting at least eight hours of sleep a night my number one priority.

Sleep changes the entire course of my day and it is something that I had been neglecting before YTT started. It’s been a real focus of mine the past week and I’ve certainly noticed the difference! I’d like to keep this up in February.

Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.

I’m doing a looooot of yoga these days so I need to remember to hydrate. I’m also doing this new thing where I chug a big glass of water first thing when I wake up in the morning and it’s made me feel so alert and energized. I highly recommend it!

What are your goals or intentions for February? How are you doing on your New Year’s Resolutions?

Great goals. You’ll see that yoga is one of my goals for February :)

The “I can’t” thing is interesting, I wonder how often I say that. I actually feel like sometimes I need to say it more haha. Yesterday afternoon I said “I am unable” twice- first to someone who asked me to join yet another committee, and once to a parent who basically wanted a parent conference in e-mail form… which I do plan to respond to but I told her that I would be unable to respond within 24 hours because I have a lot to do during that time. I felt so much better after saying both of those things haha. But, I think I’m looking at it differently than you :)

Yeah so I mean I can’t more in terms of like my abilities.. not so much commitments. Like, “I can’t be a photographer and start my own business” or “I can’t write this yoga paper” (which… might be true… haha jk)

Yeah, I have zero days off this month. At least it’s short, right? Your intentions for the month are awesome. I think saying “I can’t” wouldn’t be the kicker for me. I could fake my way through that one. I’d actually have to not think it! Take those neurons out of my brain. ;) Have a great month!

Sometimes instead of telling someone “I can’t”, I tell them that “I won’t.” It makes it more a matter of choice than ability. :)

That is a great set of goals! I am glad you made a goal to do something for yourself each day as that is so important when you are as busy as you are! I try to do the same right now, otherwise I get too bogged down and depressed over CFA studying…

I don’t set monthly intensions, but I have yearly goals and this month I realized I will definitely be able to pay off one of my undergrad student loans so I am excited about that!

I focused on getting 8 hours of sleep in January and it has helped so much! Although, I also quit caffeine so I’m still quite tired but hopefully my body will adjust soon. I need to do the chugging water first thing in the morning thing, that sounds like a great way to start the day!

You should, it’s awesome! It also curves my hunger in the morning. I’m not sure if this happens to you but when I wake up I’m really hungry a lot of the time and want to eat everything haha but after a full glass of water I’m ready for a normal breakfast

Those are great intentions – especially the sleep one. That’s something I’m trying reallyyyyyy hard to work on too! Can’t wait to hear how removing “I can’t” from your vocabulary works for you. That’s an awesome intention.
