Strong is the new skinny

February 24, 2012

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I’m getting really into strength training again. Since then, I’ve been looking high and low for some new strength circuits and exercises to try. Let me just say, wow! My experience has been kind of like when you’re shopping for a new car: once you find a car you like you notice them EVERYWHERE (has this only happened to me?). Sometimes I find new workouts when I’m not even looking! I think other women are really focusing their time on strength training too. I’ve noticed a lot of “strong is the new skinny” mantras out there and I seriously love it!

One thing I’m learning to embrace about strength training is how little equipment and space you need to complete the exercises. This is perfect for the recent college grad with little time or money to spend at the gym. My “at-home gym” consists of a yoga mat, a foam roller, and five-, ten-, and fifteen-pound weights. That’s it! I’ve even found a lot of exercises that don’t require any equipment at all.

The workout I want to share with you today I modified from Self’s 8 No-Equipment Toners (for explanations of any moves you don’t know, refer to Self.com!).

Warm up: 30 seconds of jumping jacks, arm crosses, toe touches, repeat 30 seconds of jumping jacks

What are some of your favorite no-equipment moves?

Wow, that work out seems hard to me haha- but I like the idea of doing it at home with no equipment. I think ab exercises are pretty good in this way! I also think push ups and all yoga stuff can be done with basically no equipment. That’s a great thing about yoga!

I’ve been getting into strength training too! I went on my first long run after starting to do weights and it’s amazing just how much stronger I felt. I’m still in college so I take advantage of my student rec pass. I do love pilates dvd’s if I can’t make it to the gym

this workout looks short and tough! I like it! I am doing the “tough mudder” with some school friends in may. We have a similar workout that is tough and short and doesnt require much besides weights. I will email it to you! i think you will like it! I do not have much time to run these days so I have been trying to do more more short spurt cardio things and trying to tone more (lifting + yoga) I like it!! been really busy and taking a break from marathon training and what not (my sisters are btoh doing boston this year–i am signed up but opting out this year b/c of school..womp womp.) your blog looks great–havent checked it in awhile. looks like you are doing well!
